KARL HOLMQVIST
Untitled (WHAT? WHEN? WHY? WHO?)
Kvadrat HQ, Ebeltoft, Denmark
2018
ABOUT THE PROJECT
As part of the commission Karl Holmqvist customized woven textile ‘Verpan’ with six variations of his signature language-based designs. From these, he created the work Untitled (WHAT? WHEN? WHY? WHO?), a sculpture composed of twenty-seven cubes, which can be turned around playfully, randomly creating varying combinations of words patterns.
On the special occasion of the launch of the work, the artist presented a program of spoken word, based on readings of his own poetry, video and sound – with contributions by artists FOS and Ida Ekblad.
Karl Holmqvist is an artist living and working in Berlin. The main focus of his artistic practice is on language and it includes writing in the form of artist’s books, in video animations and room size installations as well as in spoken word performances. His writing is mostly made up of quotations from a variety of sources rearranged in the form of a type of written collage that deals with repetition, double meaning and memory function.
Holmqvist’s recent one-person exhibitions include Centre d’Art Contemporaine, Geneva, Indipendenza, Rome (with Klara Liden), Kunstverein Braunschweig (with Klara Liden), Power Station, Dallas and Camden Arts Centre, London. He has participated in the Venice Biennial in 2003 and 2011, and Performa, New York in 2005, 2007 and 2013. In 2013 he received the Arthur Köpke Memory Fund Award.
