NINA BEIER

Jyderup Kvindefængsel

Jyderup (Denmark) 2021

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This project comes under the Danish 'per cent for art' program. Francesca Astesani, through the Danish Art Agency's scheme for art in public spaces, worked as the art advisor on the project.

Amongst two other artists, Nina Beier was invited to propose a piece for Jyderup kvindefængsel, a female prison in Denmark.

Beier won the competition and was commissioned by the art committee (formed by a representative from Alex Poulsen Arkitekter, the commissioner Direktoratet for Kriminalforsorgen and the art advisors South into North) to create an artwork for the premises.

The piece was installed in September 2021 and it consists of 21 marble lions (a recurrent trope in the artist's work) placed, individually and in flocks, around the outdoor areas of the prison. The sculptures have been dug into the ground, and lie partially hidden in the landscape.
